LIS Data Processing Anomalies

This web page lists anomalous data receipt and processing conditions for the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS). While the LIS SCF attempts to recover missing data and process it whenever possible, occasionally data are not recoverable or the processing algorithms may not be programmed to work under certain conditions. These conditions may be addressed in future versions of the algorithms, so please visit this site again.

LIS Data Processing Anomalies
Date (Julian) Condition Comments
09/29/98 (98272) Unable to process ephemeris file for 98272 Level 0 Data processed with 98721 ephemeris file.
11/17/98 (98321) Instrument powered off, missing some Level 0 data for this day. Instrument was powered down due to encounter with Leonid meteor stream.
11/28/98 (98332) Unable to process ephemeris file for 98332 Level 0 data processed with 98330 ephemeris file.
01/03/99 (99003) Instrument powered off; missing Level 0 data for this day HDF files generated, however, HDF files for orbit numbers 6337 through 6341 contain no data since the instrument was turned off.
01/04/99 (99004) Instrument powered off; no Level 0 data transmitted HDF files generated, however, the HDF files contain no data since the instrument was turned off.
01/05/99 (99005) Instrument powered off; no Level 0 data transmitted HDF files generated, however, the HDF files contain no data since the instrument was turned off.
01/06/99 (99006) Instrument powered off; missing Level 0 data for this day HDF files generated, however, HDF files for orbit numbers 6374 through 6386 contain no data since the instrument was turned off. The instrument was turned on (and data collected) just before 2200 UTC during orbit 6387.
07/11/99 (99192) Unable to process Level 0 data for this orbit (9313) This problem may be resolved in future versions of the science algorithm.
10/04/99 (99277) Data missing for the period 03:50:01z - 04:53:53z Onboard recorder overflow
11/17/99 (99321) Instrument powered off, missing some Level 0 data for this day. Instrument was powered down due to encounter with Leonid meteor stream.
4/22/00 (00113) Data missing for the period 01:04:35 - 01:32:41z Onboard recorder overflow
09/17-19/00 (00261 - 00263) There are no data files for orbits 16153 through 16190 due to a satellite power outage. These missing orbits occurred on days 00261 through 00263.
11/18/00 (00323) Instrument powered off, missing some Level 0 data for this day. Instrument was powered down due to encounter with Leonid meteor stream.
Delta-V Spacecraft maneuvers:
For data prior to November 1998, a processing anomaly caused the sensor's attitude to appear to be 180 degrees out of phase during Delta-V maneuvers. While there were approximately 50 such maneuvers, only a very small amount of data (~0.3% of data from Dec 1997 through Oct 1998) is affected.
